Here at Becks Martial Arts in Fort Collins, we specialize in offering Taekwondo classes for kids, teens, and adults. We strive to make our classes fun, energetic, challenging, and useful, as Taekwondo is a sport that can be used for self-defense, fitness, and overall strength and stamina. All students go through a progression of skills, which we then rank with belts as each level is achieved, starting at the white belt and going all the way up to black belt.

At Becks Martial Arts in Fort Collins, we care about the whole student, incorporating character development as part of our foundational skills necessary to move on up in rankings. From courtesy and integrity to self-control and perseverance, we teach our students the value of being a part of something more than themselves — of being a part of the community. Our students are age four to 84, and there’s always something to be learned. Below, we’ll review some more of an in depth overview of our martial arts classes, and contact us today to get started!

A tenet is a principle or belief that you hold true. In Kukkiwon Taekwondo, there are five tenets that all students strive to uphold: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit.

There are many facets to courtesy in Taekwondo. Courtesy entails the art of mutual concessions, meaning giving up your rights, interests, possessions, or comforts in order to preserve a relationship or foster a relationship’s growth. In other words, you don’t always have to be right. You can be right, just you concede for the sake of the relationship. A Taekwondo student should feel bad about their wrongdoings and always be attempting to improve themselves. Furthermore, he or she should learn from the vices of others as well. Taekwondo students should always be polite and encourage a sense of justice. Lastly, students of Taekwondo should distinguish the instructor from student, as well as junior students from more senior students, in their words and actions. Becks Martial Arts School in Fort Collins encourages courtesy in every class as respect is expected in all of our classes, from kids to adult martial arts classes. The parents see this mostly when the students address their instructors as sir and ma’am.

Integrity is normally thought of as being honest and having upright morals and values. In Kukkiwon Taekwondo, the definition is a bit looser. At Becks Martial Arts School in Fort Collins, integrity means being able to define right and wrong and feeling guilty when you do wrong so you’ll correct it the next time around. Being by nature hard to quantify, integrity is seen mostly in one’s actions, and truthfully, in one’s motivations behind their actions, which can only be known by the student. For example, is the instructor teaching martial arts for the love of the sport, or is he or she teaching for materialistic or egotistical gains? Is the student camouflaging broken materials in order to appear stronger or perhaps not earning his or her rank but requesting a level up anyways? These are more heart issues than otherwise.

Perseverance is achieving a goal despite the hardships. It’s never giving up, or never quitting until the very end — and even then you keep fighting. Patience plays a big part in perseverance, as Aesop’s tale of the tortoise and the hare epitomizes. It’s not always the fastest who wins; it’s the one who never quits. In Kukkiwon Taekwondo, you’ll face challenges. There will be certain moves that will be harder for you to master than others, and certain combinations you’ll have to master. Let’s face it, breaking a wooden board will be hard for you to do, but with patience and persistence, you’ll achieve that skill. All of the instructors and students at Becks Martial Arts School in Fort Collins are supportive and encouraging to all of our students. We love to see our martial arts students achieve their goals and move to the next level in Taekwondo. We’re your cheerleaders and you’re biggest fans!

We all get angry and lose our tempers; however, what separates those who have self-control and those who don’t is how we express those emotions, either verbally or in our behavior. This is important both inside and outside of the do-jang (or formal training hall). The last thing you want is to lash out at your opponent while sparring out of anger or some other emotion. In life, you don’t want to end up punching someone and then facing criminal charges because of it. Self-control is probably the most difficult skill to master out of all the five Kukkiwon Taekwondo tenets, and it may take a lifetime to master. The important thing that Becks Martial Arts School in Fort Collins wants to emphasize is the progress you make with regards to self-control. Recognize when you lose self-control and work towards fixing it next time is the key to mastery.

Indomitable spirit

The noblest of all of the Kukkiwon Taekwondo tenets, indomitable spirit is an inner quality. Indomitable means “one who can’t be beaten.” It comes to us from the Latin, which meant “one who cannot be tamed.” An indomitable spirit is one that cannot be beaten or broken. It shines forth no matter the circumstances and is bright even in the face of the greatest odds or certain death. Those with indomitable spirit stand up for others despite the consequences or the odds against them. They stand up for what’s right without regard to what others think. Leonidas stood against Xerxes at Thermopylae. An unidentified protester stood in front of tanks at Tiananmen Square. Rosa Parks refused to move from a bus. Although these are famous examples of indomitable spirit in great historical moments, Becks Martial Arts School in Fort Collins emphasizes that you can show indomitable spirit everyday by striving to be the best person you can be, by helping others, and by being a global citizen.

Becks Martial Arts School in Fort Collins promotes the tenets of Kukkiwon Taekwondo with all of our students in our martial arts classes. Along with certain skills of Taekwondo a student has to master in order to improve rankings, such as kicking combos and self-defense moves, each ranking also emphasizes humility, manners, and anti-bullying. The five tenets of Kukkiwon Taekwondo are woven throughout everything we do here.

Becks Martial Arts School in Fort Collins is heavily involved in the community, and we promote causes that are near and dear to our hearts, such as those living with cancer, veterans and active duty military, law enforcement, and first responders. We also support the causes that our students are passionate about and are always willing to jump on board and raise awareness.

Although honesty is part of integrity, honesty itself is emphasized heavily here at Becks Martial Arts School in Fort Collins, especially with our younger students. We recognize that in today’s society white lies have crossed over to full-blown lies and seem to be accepted in some areas. Here at Becks Martial Arts School, we make a clear distinction between lying and telling the truth with no gray areas.

Becks Martial Arts School in Fort Collins also makes a clear distinction between fighting for self-defense and fighting for honor or glory. Kukkiwon Taekwondo is peaceful sport that trains students how to fight only when needed. The goal is peace and harmony in all that we do, as well as improving our communities through being upright citizens.
